Fifty years ago， a group of teenagers spent a weekend on Holy Island。 For some， that time forged friendships that have lasted well beyond。 Now they meet every five years， to celebrate their bond， and remember the friend lost to a tragic accident during their first reunion。 Only five remain for their most recent gathering。 Philip， Annie， Rick， Ken， and Louise reminisce and drink well into the night。 Rick is surprisingly exuberant， considering that the celebrity journalist has been fired amidst al Fifty years ago， a group of teenagers spent a weekend on Holy Island。 For some， that time forged friendships that have lasted well beyond。 Now they meet every five years， to celebrate their bond， and remember the friend lost to a tragic accident during their first reunion。 Only five remain for their most recent gathering。 Philip， Annie， Rick， Ken， and Louise reminisce and drink well into the night。 Rick is surprisingly exuberant， considering that the celebrity journalist has been fired amidst allegations of sexual misconduct。 Then， the next morning he is found dead。 Sometime during the night he has hung himself from a rafter。 Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope and her team are called to investigate， and Vera isn’t convinced it’s a true suicide。 There’s no suicide note， and Rick may have lost his job， but he also informed his friends of a book deal， one that is not only well paying， but hints at secrets best kept in the past。 And Vera is， as usual proved right， and uncovers a myriad of dark secrets and suspects， some surprisingly close to home。 I’ve read and enjoyed all of the Vera Stanhope series， and this is no exception。 Cleeves deftly creates a plot that is clever and surprising。 As with most all of Vera’s investigations， the shared past of the victim and suspects becomes extremely relevant。 But this is a plot device of Cleeves’ that I never tire of。 She has the ability to use it to draw characters imbued with emotional complexity， allowing the reader to engage easily。 There is also a brilliant， shocking ， and emotional ending that will leave the reader craving for the next book。 If I have one complaint， it is that， while you know that the series is set in the present， they have always seemed timeless。 With this installment Cleeves drew a great deal of attention to specific current events （the Me Too movement， climate change， Covid）。 I found it rather jarring。 It had the feel of a clumsy attempt to make the book （and Vera） more relevant to the times。 That being said， I wouldn’t throw this book out of bed just for that one misstep。 This was a great addition to the series， and I am definitely craving for the next one。 My thanks to St。 Martin's Press， Minotaur Books and NetGalley for the advanced reader copy made available for my review。 。。。more

Having tapped into Ann Cleeves writing via the Shetland series， I have since become very attached to the Vera Stanhope series。 This latest offering is compelling and typified the complexity of her narratives that keep you speculating right till the end。Very enjoyable - I look forward to more in this series now that Shetland series has come to its inevitable conclusion。

Thank you Macmillan UK Audio and Netgalley for this audio copy。 It was a nice detective story。 I love the events took place on an island。 I am really loving books more when the sea is near。 It was an interesting discovering for the detective that was new to me but I might listen more in this series。 I went blind and was a nice surprise。 I love when the past is connected to the present and this reunion were an interesting start。

Thank to Netgalley I was able to review the audiobook。 When I requested the book I did not realize it was the 10th book in the series， but do not feel I missed out on anything as the author did a wonderful job with the characters。 I will admit， I had my suspicions on who the murder was and I got it right this time。

4。5 My first introduction to this author was her Shetland series。 I read them all and then watched the series on television。 Both were brilliant。 I then discovered this series and Vera but my intro was reversed。 Watched the series and then read the books。 I seem to love pretty much anything this author writes。 Vera is a wonderful character， while she doesn't fit the regular mold of brilliant detective it is quickly discovered that one underestimates her at their own peril。 Her frumpy look belies 4。5 My first introduction to this author was her Shetland series。 I read them all and then watched the series on television。 Both were brilliant。 I then discovered this series and Vera but my intro was reversed。 Watched the series and then read the books。 I seem to love pretty much anything this author writes。 Vera is a wonderful character， while she doesn't fit the regular mold of brilliant detective it is quickly discovered that one underestimates her at their own peril。 Her frumpy look belies her intelligence。 Taking place on Holy island， an island that is blocked off when the tide rises， a group of now elderly school friends meet for a scheduled reunion， but not all survive。So begins a case that seems at first to be slowly progressing as Vera and her team try to figure out if this is a crime that stems from the last or present。 Once it does start unravelling， the pace moves quickly and soon the tangled mess of people and motive becomes clearer。 To Vera at least but as for me， I didn't guess the who done it。The audio and the narrator， Janine Burkett， were marvelous。ARC from Netgalley。 。。。more

Ann Cleaves is nothing but consistent。 I have read each of her books， some more suspenseful， others less， but always a good read。 Her hallmark for me has always been the Strong character who leads， in this case Vera Stanhope。 I now must confess l cannot read without imagining the actors who appear in the wonderful BBC produced adaptations。

My thanks to the publisher， NetGalley， and the author for allowing me to read and review， ‘The Rising Tide’ by Ann Cleeves。When several aging friends meet for their ongoing reunion after another 5 years have past， one of them will not be returning home alive。 Their retreat to a remote island brings out old memories and old animosities that can no longer be tolerated。 This brings DI Vera Stanhope and her team in to investigate and determine who the murderer could be。 It seems to Vera that this is My thanks to the publisher， NetGalley， and the author for allowing me to read and review， ‘The Rising Tide’ by Ann Cleeves。When several aging friends meet for their ongoing reunion after another 5 years have past， one of them will not be returning home alive。 Their retreat to a remote island brings out old memories and old animosities that can no longer be tolerated。 This brings DI Vera Stanhope and her team in to investigate and determine who the murderer could be。 It seems to Vera that this is somehow tied in to events in the past， but the participants are not quickly persuaded to tell all of the facts of their history （which is very typical of British murder mysteries）。 In the final rush to solve the case， their will be more casualties， and even Vera gets too close to also being a victim。Frumpy Vera is a great detective with unorthodox methods， but she gets the job done。 This is just another great story by Ann Cleeves， and a nice addition to the series。 。。。more

I am coming late to the Vera Stanhope party， but I am a complete convert。 Whenever she says “Not to worry， pet，” she reminds me so much of my beloved Columbo and his “Just one more thing。” In this outing， Ann Cleeves does something else she excels at: setting。 This book is set on the remote British island of Lindisfarne， or “Holy Island，” a place not actually an island， but one that becomes an island thanks to rising and falling tides。 That particular detail could not have a more beloved place i I am coming late to the Vera Stanhope party， but I am a complete convert。 Whenever she says “Not to worry， pet，” she reminds me so much of my beloved Columbo and his “Just one more thing。” In this outing， Ann Cleeves does something else she excels at: setting。 This book is set on the remote British island of Lindisfarne， or “Holy Island，” a place not actually an island， but one that becomes an island thanks to rising and falling tides。 That particular detail could not have a more beloved place in the mystery genre， and Ann Cleeves， the ace of setting， does it better than anyone else。Holy Island is the place where a group of friends， who met in high school， meet every five years to reminisce and catch up with one another。 It’s not a typical high school reunion， but a reunion of a group formed long ago by a young teacher called “Only Connect” （a phrase taken from the Forester novel Howard’s End）。 In 1972 it was a radical idea for a group to get together and explore their feelings。 The friends are now getting older， of course， and a reunion of a group in their later 60’s is not the same as one when they were in their 20’s， though， as the weekend proves， old resentments， alliances and competitiveness hold their own。The group is small and becomes smaller when one of their number commits suicide – or does he？ Vera is sure it’s murder and of course she’s right。 In typical Cleeves fashion the investigation is thorough and reaches back into the past， as Vera looks into connections made 50 years ago。 There’s a classic assemblage of suspects: the hippy girl who now runs a fancy bakery; the rebel who became a vicar; the couple who were teachers， one now suffering from dementia; the dead man， the firecracker of the group， a reporter disgraced by recent allegations of sexual harassment。Then there are outliers， those that were a part of the group who no longer attend， like the young teacher who formed the group and the first spouses of two of the members。 Bonds formed at that age are strong ones （I myself meet with my high school classmates every five years， and we slip easily back into comfortable friendship every time）， and the “Only Connect” group bonded in 1972 and never looked back。The joys of these books are many。 Along with the beautiful setting there are the characters – each member of the reunion group is carefully delineated and explored， and so too are Vera’s team。 They get believably frustrated with her but they also respect her。 Her backstory permeates her behavior， especially her difficult relationship with her recently deceased father。As is also typical， Cleeves’ books are a slow burn， and when they catch fire towards the end it’s very difficult to stop reading。 There’s a surprising and heartbreaking final death and the resolution of the crimes is memorable and well played on the part of the author。 This was another wonderful read。 。。。more

The Rising Tide by Ann Cleeves is a seriously good British crime novel。 The plot， the characters， the locations: perfect！ This was my first Vera novel but， having seen a couple of episodes on television， I think Brenda Blethyn was perfectly cast as DCI Vera Stanhope and I had no trouble picturing her as I read。For fifty years a group of friends has been meeting once every five years on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne to commemorate a weekend retreat they had all once attended as sixth formers; th The Rising Tide by Ann Cleeves is a seriously good British crime novel。 The plot， the characters， the locations: perfect！ This was my first Vera novel but， having seen a couple of episodes on television， I think Brenda Blethyn was perfectly cast as DCI Vera Stanhope and I had no trouble picturing her as I read。For fifty years a group of friends has been meeting once every five years on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne to commemorate a weekend retreat they had all once attended as sixth formers; this year， however， Vera and her team are called in to investigate the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of one of the group after their first night on the island。From that point on the story unfolds in the most interesting way， exploring the personal stories of not only the suspects but also the investigating detectives。 The writing is in turns witty and empathetic and it seems possible that all of the suspects， who at first appeared to have no motives for killing their friend， could have secrets buried in their pasts。 Vera needs to find out if， or how， there could be a connection with this death and the apparent accidental death of a group member at the first reunion， forty five years ago， when her car was engulfed by the rising tide over the causeway between the island and the mainland。 England is a treasure trove for writers of crime fiction with all its ancient historic locations and， as well， the sea closing in over the causeway is always a stunning dramatic effect in a murder mystery。 The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is a perfect setting for this terrific Ann Cleeves story。 It was hard to pick who might have dunnit but the solution was absolutely satisfactory。I read a lot of crime novels and this one was a standout！ 。。。more

It’s like a modern day Agatha Christie。 It’s the book version of Clue。 I thought this book was wildly unpredictable， which is exactly what makes it a great thriller。 A group of friends meets every 5 years for a reunion。 This year， one of them is murdered。 Now authorities will track and trace back through their friendship to try to find the answer of who did it。 Their investigation， however， turns up even more bodies。 Thanks to NetGalley for access to this one。 The narrator did a great job。
